Kogi Govt to restrict movement of trucks, establish climate change agency

Kogi State Government has unveiled plans to initiate legal process to restrict movement of heavy-duty trucks during specific hours within Lokoja, the state capital.

This move is parts of the proactive measures taken to forestall the reoccurring heavy-duty truck related accidents within Lokoja metropolis.

Kogi State Commissioner of Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, who made made this known while briefing newsmen shortly after the state Executive Council meeting, explained further that the step is also part of government’s response to the promise it made during the last truck related accident along the Felele road in Lokoja

He disclosed that a bill to this effect, would soon be sent to the Kogi State House of Assembly for the legal backing.

According to him, the bill to restrict the movement of these heavy-duty trucks became necessary in view of the many deaths caused by these trucks.

His words, ” you will recalled that these trucks have killed a lot of people, the last tragic incident occurred near the Federal University, Lokoja”.

As a result of this, he stated that the state Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, promised the students and the university management that proactive measures would be taken to prevent reoccurrence of such an ugly incident.

Inline with this, ” Today, council has approved the process of sending a bill to the Kogi State House of Assembly to restrict trucks movement during specific hours”. He pointed out.

Speaking on the progress report on the fencing of the Confluence University of Science and Technology, CUSTECH, Osara, he disclosed that the construction of the perimeter fencing, initiated after a security breach is 90% completion

Also, he added that the male and female hostels have been completed and officially handed over to the school management, while that of the perimeter fencing project at the Kogi State University, Kabba is in progress.

In another development, the Kogi State government has also resolved to send a memo to the State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Kogi State Agency For Climate Change.

According to him, the move follows Kogi state’s participation at the International Climate Change Summit in Baku, where the state Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Oluasegun, and other officials represented the state.
