Power surge sparks fire in Ilorin, two apartments damaged

A fire outbreak on Tuesday evening destroyed parts of a residential building at Umar Alabata Street in the Akerebiata area of Ilorin, leaving two self-contained apartments badly affected.

The incident, which occurred around 4:25pm, was quickly responded to by operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service following a distress call.

According to a statement issued by Hassan  Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the State Fire Service, the fire crew arrived the scene promptly and battled the flames to prevent further damage.

“The building involved was a block of five room-and-parlour self-contained apartments. Out of the five units, two were affected by the fire,” the statement disclosed.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a power surge.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, who expressed sympathy with the affected residents, urged members of the public to be more vigilant about electrical safety.

“People must always be cautious with the way they handle electrical appliances and installations. Many of these fires are preventable if safety measures are followed,” he warned.

No casualties were reported in the incident.
