The Osun State House of Assembly, is proposing a new law that will make skating on public roads and sidewalks a criminal offence, attracting stiff penalties including imprisonment or a hefty fine.
During its Tuesday plenary session, the Assembly deliberated on the “Osun State Skating Restriction Bill 2025”, which seeks to outlaw the use of skateboards and roller skates in public spaces across the state.
Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, defended the bill, stating that skating should be considered an indoor activity, not one meant for public roads or sidewalks.
“Skating and activities like it are better suited indoors where there is no threat to public safety. The roads are for vehicles and pedestrians, not for sporting activities that could cause accidents,” Egbedun said.

The proposed legislation prescribes a minimum jail term of six months or a fine of at least N250,000 for offenders. In a less severe provision, those found guilty may face a six-month sentence or pay N20,000, depending on the court’s discretion.
It will also empower residents to report violators to the police and grants magistrate and high courts the authority to handle such cases.
The bill has sparked mixed reactions in the state, with some residents supporting the move for safety reasons, while others argue it could stifle youth engagement in sports.
The Assembly adjourned its session to Monday, May 12, 2025, when further discussions on the bill are expected to continue.
