From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Tension has gripped the herder community in Kwara State, following the assassination of Alhaji Idris Abubakar, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), in the state.

He was shot by unknown gunmen at the entrance of his residence in Oke Ose, Oke-Oyi, on the night of March 8, 2025.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, revealing that officers recovered five expended 7.62mm shells from the crime scene.

Spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, stated that Abubakar’s remains had been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) mortuary.

Reacting to the killing, the Commissioner of Police, CP Victor Olaiya, condemned the act and assured that a thorough investigation was underway.

“We will not relent until those behind this gruesome act are apprehended and brought to justice,” he declared. Urging residents to remain calm and provide any useful information.

The State Secretary of MACBAN, Hon. AbdulAzeez Muhammed, described Abubakar’s death as a tragic loss, calling for prayers and justice. “May Allah forgive his shortcomings, admit him into Aljannah Firdausi, and grant his family the strength to bear this loss,” he said.

Abubakar, who played a significant role in the state’s livestock sector, is survived by two wives and six children. His murder has sparked widespread concern, with calls for heightened security to protect herders and other vulnerable groups in the region.
