FG embracing AI to enhance education – Education Minister

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has expressed the Ministry’s commitment to integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to improve Nigeria’s education sector and shape the future in a responsible way, as the nation embraces the new phenomenon.

The Minister stated this at the commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Education with the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

Dr. Alausa who highlighted the transformative role of AI in education also underscored the role of AI in shaping the future of education.

He stressed the importance of tools like virtual reality, gamification, and AI-driven grading systems, which transform the learning experience for students and teachers.

“As the nation embraces AI, we have outlined a strategic roadmap to ensure responsible AI integration in education. This includes incorporating AI literacy into school curricula, equipping educators with necessary skills, and fostering partnerships with global stakeholders.

“It is our commitment to harnessing the potential of AI to enhance education in Nigeria. Through commitment to innovation and responsible AI integration, the Ministry aims to create a more accessible, efficient, and innovative learning environment for all Nigerians,” said the Minister.

He explained that notable achievements have been recorded in the use of modern technologies in the education sector, which includes the establishment of integrated platforms that provide comprehensive data on tertiary institutions and admissions nationwide.

“Others include the introduction of innovative e-learning solutions, such as Inspire for Students and Ignite for Teachers, has enhanced access to quality education. These platforms create virtual classrooms and simplify lesson planning for educators.

“The Nigeria Learning Passport offers over 15,000 educational resources, making it a valuable tool for students.

“Additionally, the Tertiary Information System has revolutionized undergraduate data management, while automated accreditation services have streamlined evaluation and certification processes,” he said.

Dr. Alausa, who was represented by the Director of Polytechnics, Dr. Ejeh Usman, emphasised on the Ministry’s resolve to position Nigeria as a leader in digitalized education

Earlier, a Principal Education Officer, Ms. Ochei Chinenye, made a presentation titled ‘Showcasing ICT in Achieving AI Integration in Education.’

The presentation showcased Nigeria’s progress in adopting AI and digital technologies in education, providing practical strategies for embedding these tools into teaching and learning processes.

Deputy Director of the Education Sport Service Department, Ms. Uche Onwuama expressed gratitude to all participants for their dedication to advancing Nigeria’s education system.
