From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, is set to graduate 71 First-Class students among 6,374 first-degree recipients during its 12th convocation ceremony slated for Saturday.

Addressing journalists at the university campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, provided a breakdown of the graduating students, revealing that 1,828 earned Second Class Upper Division, 3,501 attained Second Class Lower Division, and 974 achieved Third Class in the 2023/2024 academic session.

Professor Jimoh further disclosed that the institution is also graduating 6,891 postgraduate students, including 49 PhD holders and 468 Master’s degree recipients.

In response to the transportation challenges faced by students living off-campus, the university management he said, has embarked on expanding its hostel facilities.

“We have recently completed a 104-bedspace hostel, which will be commissioned today, Thursday, by the Chairman of KWASU’s Governing Council, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, OON.

Additionally, KWASU has partnered with investors to deliver the Students’ Smart City Hostel project, which will provide 25,000 bedspaces in its first phase, with 8,700 bedspaces set for delivery within the next few months,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Highlighting the importance of these projects, Professor Jimoh remarked, “As a university desirous of producing total graduates, one of our goals is to secure more accommodation facilities on campus for our students.

“This is one way we can ensure our students have access to an all-round university culture. We hope more private organizations will partner with us to drive the research and infrastructure components of this great institution.”

The Vice-Chancellor also lauded KWASU’s achievements in electric vehicle conversion and hybrid CNG technology, emphasising the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth.

Professor Jimoh expressed gratitude to the Kwara State Government for providing funds to complete the Osi and Ilesha-Baruba campuses, noting that the facilities, including lecture halls, laboratories, and offices, are now operational.

He reaffirmed the institution’s zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline and internet fraud, stating, “any student found engaging in such behavior has always been shown the way out of the institution.”

The convocation ceremony is expected to showcase KWASU’s strides in academic excellence, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure development.
