-Warns Against Vigilantism, Misinformation

From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin.

The Kwara State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, has confirmed the arrest of suspects linked to a murder in the Asunlere area of Oke Oyi, Ilorin, Kwara State.

Speaking to journalists at the police headquarters in Ilorin on Wednesday, CP Olaiya detailed the events surrounding the brutal killing of 34-year-old Rafiu Akao.

“The incident, reported on November 4, involved the gruesome killing of 34-year-old Rafiu Akao, whose headless body was discovered by residents near a stream,” CP Olaiya said.

Police detectives responded to the scene, where they recovered an Itel Android phone and a motorcycle believed to belong to the assailants.

Following a swift investigation, officers arrested two main suspects, 38 year old Peter Samuel and 26 year old Jeremiah Tiozinda, on November.

The suspects reportedly confessed to the crime, revealing they discarded Akao’s head in a nearby river. Efforts to recover the remains are ongoing, according to the Commissioner.

“The Kwara State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), is actively pursuing the case to ensure justice. All necessary resources are being deployed to ensure thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice,” CP Olaiya assured.

In a related incident, CP Olaiya, warned against acts of vigilantism after an innocent farmer was mistakenly attacked by villagers and commercial motorcycle operators who suspected him of involvement in the crime.

“The farmer’s vehicle suffered extensive damage in the attack, allegedly led by Yusuf Abdulkareem, 22 and Jaiyeola Fatai, 40, who have now been charged with conspiracy, public disturbance, and mischief.

The police chief also addressed rumors that had surfaced on social media linking the local restaurant “Item7” to the murder.

He disclosed that the rumor was started by one Abdulwakeel Olajuwon, through his social media platform, “Weaky TV.” Olajuwon has been charged under the Cybercrimes Act for spreading false information.

CP Olaiya, issued a stern reminder, noting, “deliberately spreading false information to incite harm or disrupt investigations is a serious offense with legal consequences.”

He called on the public to avoid sharing unverified information and instead rely on updates from law enforcement, assuring that the investigation is progressing toward a full resolution.
