Kogi State Government has approved N600 million for the payment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees for 18,734 students.
The gesture which aims to ensure access to quality education, was reaffirmed by the State Commissioner for Education, Honourable Wemi Jones, during a press briefing held in his office on Tuesday.
According to him, the state government has approved 600 million naira to cover WAEC fees for 18,734 senior secondary students in public schools for the 2024/2025 academic year, an increase from 15,033 students last year.
The Commissioner disclosed that the payment is in line with the Free examination fee for pupils in public schools law enacted by the State Government. He appreciated Gov. Usman Ahmed Ododo for continuing with the legacy and foundation laid by his predecessor, Gov Yahaya Bello.

According to him, this law mandates that the government pays for the internal and external examinations for students in public primary and secondary schools, easing the financial burden on families and giving every child in the state access to quality education, as this will reduce the number of out of school children.
He disclosed that there was a significant increase from last year’s coverage, which was 15,033 students. According to the Commissioner, the aim of the policy which is to reduce the rate of out-of-school children in the state is being achieved.
Hon. Jones stressed that the government is committed to eliminating examination costs, in order to encourage more students to complete their education and pursue further opportunities for personal and professional growth, while reducing the financial burden on citizens, parents and guardians.
He added that since 2016, Kogi State has prioritised education, dedicating a substantial 30% of its budget to the sector. This sustained investment underscores the administration’s long-term vision to improve education, reduce poverty, and increase school enrollment rates across the state.
The Commissioner urged school principals and administrators to work closely with the ministry to ensure a smooth and timely registration process, while applauding the school principals who supported the government’s free WAEC initiative last year.
Hon. Jones issued a stern warning to school administrators against attempting to exploit the government’s free education program for personal gain, emphasising that any principals or heads found guilty of such actions will face strict sanctions.
To ensure that all eligible students benefit from the program, the ministry will also conduct interviews with school heads, addressing any genuine cases of omission so that no child is left out, ” he added”.
