From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The President of the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Nigeria (APSON), Prof. Roland Osuoji, has assured Nigerians of a continuous improvement in the quality of surgical care provided for children.

He made this commitment during the 23rd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the association held in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Speaking on the conference’s theme, “Quality Improvement in Children Surgical Care,” Prof. Osuoji, noted that paediatric surgery has grown into a well-established sub-specialty within Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“The commitment of paediatric surgeons to improving surgical outcomes for children is unwavering, and we will continue to strive for higher standards in our practice,” Osuoji stated, stressing the importance of standardized procedures in enhancing the quality of care.

He also called for more investment in infrastructure and the development of sub-specializations in surgical care to ensure that clinical quality translates into patient safety, emphasizing that “safe surgery saves lives.”

In his welcome address, APSON Vice Chairman, Prof. Lukman AbdulRahman, encouraged surgeons to adopt innovative techniques to further enhance surgical outcomes for children.

He also appreciated the donors and volunteers whose contributions have supported the association’s work.
