The Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET) has expressed sadness over the death of former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, CON, describing his passing as a significant loss to the people of Kogi State.
The Chairperson of KONGONET, Hamza Aliyu, in a condolence statement on Sunday, said the organisation joined the Government and people of Kogi State, the Idris family, friends and associates in mourning the former governor.
Idris, who governed Kogi State from 2003 to 2012, died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 77.
Aliyu said the death of the former governor was not only a moment of grief but also an opportunity to reflect on his years in public service and his contributions to the development of Kogi State.
He listed several public projects and interventions associated with the Idris administration that remain important landmarks in the state’s development history, among them the Greater Lokoja Water Scheme, Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Confluence Stadium, Lokoja International Market, housing schemes, road infrastructure, and investments in education and other public institutions.

According to him, the continued relevance of some of these public assets underscores the need for successive administrations to preserve, maintain and improve infrastructure established by previous governments for the benefit of present and future generations.
“Public projects and policies outlive individual administrations only when succeeding governments maintain, improve and adapt them to changing needs,” Aliyu said.
He explained that one meaningful way to honour the memory of past leaders was to protect useful public investments and ensure that they continued to deliver value to citizens.
Beyond his physical development projects, Aliyu noted that Idris would also be remembered by many Kogites for his calm, accessible and amiable disposition.
He observed that the former governor’s ability to relate with people from different communities and backgrounds reflected the importance of openness, peaceful engagement and accessibility in public leadership.
Aliyu stressed that Idris’s passing should also encourage renewed attention to institutional continuity, adding that development should not be disrupted by changes in administration.
KONGONET extended its heartfelt condolences to the immediate and extended Idris family, the people of Omala Local Government Area, the Government and people of Kogi State, and all those mourning the former governor.
The organisation prayed that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and gives his family, friends and the people of Kogi State the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
