The Standup for Women Society (SWS), Kogi State Chapter, has called for urgent regulatory intervention following reports of chemically adulterated palm oil in circulation across Nigerian markets.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson, Falilat Bismillai, the group expressed deep concern over the development, noting that the situation poses serious health risks to families and consumers.

SWS said it was particularly saddened by a tragic incident in Lagos where a mother and her child reportedly lost their lives after consuming contaminated red oil. The victims are said to be of Kogi State origin.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the victims and stand in solidarity with them in this difficult time,” the statement read.

The women’s group urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other relevant food safety agencies to immediately intensify market surveillance.

This, according to SWS, should include comprehensive sampling and testing of palm oil from major distributors and vendors to identify and remove harmful products from circulation.

The Society also called for the prosecution of anyone found culpable in the production or distribution of adulterated food products.

“Ensuring accountability is critical to deterring future occurrences and protecting public health,” it stated.

Furthermore, SWS appealed to State Governors and Local Government Chairmen to establish and strengthen routine inspection teams across markets to ensure proactive monitoring of food items.

“The safety of citizens must remain a top priority. No individual or family should suffer harm as a result of consuming basic food items,” the statement concluded.
