The Kogi State House of Assembly, has sponsored the Kogi State Justice Sector Reform Team Bill, 2025, as part of efforts to overhaul the state’s justice system and improve access to justice for citizens.
The legislators, said the reform has become necessary to address persistent challenges in the administration of justice, particularly delays in the determination of cases, prolonged pre-trial detention and repeated adjournments.
During deliberations on the bill, the lawmakers stressed the need for a justice system that is effective, accessible and capable of protecting the rights of citizens.
Member representing Ogori/Magongo Constituency, Hon Bode Ogunmola, expressed concern over the delays associated with justice delivery in the state.

The Committee, in its report, maintained that passing a sound and well-drafted reform bill would strengthen the justice sector, promote the rule of law and enhance the protection of citizens’ rights across Kogi State.
Following a clause-by-clause consideration of the bill, the Committee rejected proposals seeking the deletion of some sections.
According to the lawmakers, removing the provisions could create legal uncertainty, leave out important operational details and make it difficult to clearly define the functions and responsibilities of the various committees involved in the reform process.
The Committee therefore recommended that the relevant provisions be retained to ensure that the proposed law provides a comprehensive framework for justice sector reform.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, upheld the decision for the bill to be redrafted to incorporate all submissions and observations made by members.
He also commended the Committee for its work and efforts toward ensuring that the proposed legislation would provide a stronger legal framework for justice administration in Kogi State.
The bill is expected to provide a coordinated approach to reforming the justice sector and addressing some of the challenges affecting effective justice delivery in the state.
