From David Onuoja, Abuja
The House of Representatives Committee on Power, has commended the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), for accelerating work on the 570MW Alaoji Combined Cycle Power Plant in Abia State.
The committee, led by Hon. Victor Nwokolo, made the commendation during an oversight visit to the project site, noting significant progress under the current management.
Nwokolo praised NDPHC’s Managing Director, Engr. Jennifer Adighije, for resolving logistical bottlenecks that had stalled the project for over 20 years. “Let me start by commending the MD for being proactive,” he said, highlighting efforts to recover critical equipment and reposition the project for completion.
The committee observed tangible progress, including the recovery of over 100 containers holding project equipment. Nwokolo noted that substantial equipment purchases had already been made, but warned that waiting for manufacturing completion before inspection could cause further delays.
The lawmaker also emphasised that improved electricity supply to Aba, a major manufacturing hub, would boost employment and economic productivity. “Aba is a place where you have a lot of self-employment and many businesses that need power,” he said.
Adighije briefed the committee on steps taken to address delays, including compelling the contractor to submit a revised recovery plan. The project is now expected to be completed by Q3 2027, with NDPHC providing technical and financial support.
The committee directed the contractor to provide full visibility of equipment purchases and manufacturing progress, urging acceleration of external works ahead of the rainy season. Nwokolo expressed optimism that the committee’s oversight would further accelerate progress.
Adighije commended President Bola Tinubu, for approving the Power Sector Refinancing Plan, saying it would improve liquidity in the electricity market. She reaffirmed NDPHC’s commitment to supporting the government’s goal of expanding electricity access nationwide.
The Alaoji project has reached 16% completion, up from 1% when Adighije took office. NDPHC is working to complete the project without further setbacks, ensuring reliable electricity supply to the region.
The committee’s visit underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s power sector, with stakeholders expecting tangible results from ongoing projects.
