From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has called on stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and credible Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, coming up on February 21, 2026 Saturday.

He made this appeal at a stakeholders’ meeting held Barcelona Hotel, Abuja recently, emphasising on the Commission’s commitment to transparency and inclusiveness.

Prof. Amupitan noted that 1,680,315 registered voters will cast their ballots in 2,822 polling units across six Area Councils.

He highlighted the Commission’s preparations, including the deployment of 11,873 Polling Unit Officials, 282 Supervisory Presiding Officers, and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), for voter accreditation and result uploading.

The Chairman however, warned against vote trading, directing security agencies to apprehend any offender found during the process. He equally urged candidates and party leaders to prevail on supporters to act responsibly and respect the rules.

Prof. Amupitan maintained INEC’s neutrality, stating that, the Commission’s mandate is to provide an enabling environment for voters to choose their representatives freely.

He also called for peaceful conduct, strict compliance with the law, and accurate reporting by the media. Adding that, the Commission has accredited 89 observer groups and 700 journalists to cover the election.
