From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the release of six vigilante members earlier arrested by soldiers in Edo State, after investigations showed they were not involved in any criminal activity.

The vigilantes, who were travelling in a vehicle belonging to Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, were arrested by personnel of the Nigerian Army along the Auchi–Ikpeshi Road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.

They were subsequently handed over to the Kwara State Police Command on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, by the Brigade Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi Barracks, Ilorin, Brigadier General N. N. Rume, for investigation and proper profiling.

Confirming the development, the Police said investigations revealed that the six individuals are bona fide members of a vigilante group working in collaboration with recognised security agencies to curb banditry and other criminal activities.

“Following a thorough investigation, it was established that the individuals are legitimate vigilante members operating in support of ongoing security efforts. They were therefore exonerated and released to their respective leaders,” the Command stated.

The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to cooperation among security agencies and community-based security outfits, stressing the need for all groups to operate strictly within the law.

According to him, “Synergy among security agencies and local vigilante groups remains critical to effective crime fighting, but all such collaborations must be guided by the rule of law.”

CP Adekimi also assured residents of Kwara State of the Police Command’s resolve to continue safeguarding lives and property across the state.

The Police further urged members of the public to remain calm and continue to support security agencies with credible information that would enhance peace and security in the state.
