•Appeals for transparency,citizens participation

Kogi State House of Assembly has commenced a public hearing on the proposed 2026 Appropriation Bill, with a strong call for transparency, accountability, and active public participation in shaping the state’s economic future.

Speaking at the opening of the session, Hon. Olawumi Jacobs, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Budget and Economic Planning, described the event as “a significant milestone in our democratic process”, highlighting the importance of engaging citizens in budget decisions.

The hearing followed the formal presentation of the 2026 budget by the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, who submitted the document to the Assembly for scrutiny and approval.

Jacobs emphasised that the budget was not just a financial document but “a blueprint for the socio-economic transformation of Kogi State,” capturing the administration’s priorities, aspirations, and commitment to improving the lives of residents across the 21 local government areas.

He urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prepare for vigorous legislative oversight in 2026.

According to him, the committee will embark on project visits, review expenditure patterns, and ensure value for money across all government activities.

“Our oversight is not meant to witch-hunt, but to support effective governance and ensure accountability,” he said.

Jacobs also encouraged citizens to partner with the committee by reporting discrepancies, raising concerns, and demanding transparency at all levels of governance.

The Chairman extended appreciation to Governor Ododo for presenting what he described as a comprehensive and people-focused budget, and thanked the Speaker, other lawmakers, invited guests, civil society organizations, and members of the press for participating in the democratic exercise.

He expressed optimism that once implemented, the 2026 budget would drive inclusive growth, create opportunities, and strengthen the developmental trajectory of the state.

“Together, let us work toward a Kogi State we can all be proud of,” he concluded.
