A lifeless body believed to be that of a mentally challenged man, was recently recovered from the Asa River along Emir’s Road in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
According to a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity, Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, the body was discovered floating in the river around 11:06 a.m. and was later retrieved by operatives of the service.
Adekunle noted that the cause of the drowning could not be immediately determined, adding that the remains had been handed over to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, for further action.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, who sympathized with the public over the sad incident, urged residents to be cautious and avoid unsafe movements near riverbanks and other water bodies, especially during the rainy season.
He said, “We advise members of the public to always exercise care and avoid unnecessary risks around rivers and open water areas. Prevention and vigilance can help save lives.”
The incident has drawn concern among residents, with many calling for safety barriers and public awareness campaigns to prevent future tragedies around the Asa River.
