From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Ilorin branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has pledged stronger collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  in the ongoing fight against corruption, particularly in Kwara State.

This commitment was reaffirmed when the NBA Ilorin Chairman, Barrister Sulyman Kosemani, led members of his executive on a courtesy visit to the EFCC Zonal Office in Ilorin, where they met with the Zonal Director, Mr. Daniel Isei.

Kosemani commended the Commission for its efforts in tackling financial crimes and called for intensified scrutiny of politically exposed persons, especially public office holders managing funds in the wake of fuel subsidy removal.

He also urged the EFCC to focus strictly on economic and financial crimes while allowing civil matters to be addressed by the courts.

“We believe that deeper collaboration between the Bar and the EFCC will strengthen the pursuit of justice and accountability,” Kosemani said. “Our members are ready to contribute meaningfully to ensure a transparent and productive relationship.”

In his response, Isei described lawyers as indispensable partners in the fight against corruption, emphasising that collaboration was vital for progress.

“Lawyers and law enforcement agents cannot do without each other. We can achieve more together through synergy,” he stated.

The EFCC director, however, cautioned against frivolous applications aimed at delaying trials and urged lawyers to provide credible intelligence that could aid investigations, particularly in high-profile cases.

“As far as we are concerned, our gates are open to lawyers and other stakeholders for collaboration,” Isei assured. “We remain committed to professionalism and integrity in the discharge of our duties.”

The visit highlighted the resolve of both institutions to strengthen ties in promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law across Kwara State and beyond.
