…calls for claims, objections

From David Onuoja Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday, 17th April 2026, concluded the second phase of its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with 3,748,704 Nigerians completing their registration.

In a statement it issued today, the figure, released in the Commission’s week 14 update, covers both online pre-registrations and physical completions at designated centres across the country as preparations intensify for the 2027 General Election.

According to INEC, 2,259,288 citizens completed their registration via the online pre-registration portal, while 1,489,416 finalized the process in person.

The Commission stressed that the numbers remain preliminary and will undergo further verification to eliminate duplicates, deceased persons, and non-citizens from the register. Officials however described the turnout as evidence of sustained public engagement in the electoral process.

With the registration window now closed, INEC is shifting to the next critical stage: the display of the Register of Voters for Claims and Objections.

The exercise will run nationwide from 29th April to 5th May, 2026. During this period, Nigerians who registered in the second phase are urged to visit designated centres to confirm their details and flag any ineligible entries. INEC noted that public participation at this stage is vital to maintaining a clean and credible voter roll.

The CVR is being implemented in phases. Phase one ran from 18th August to 10th December 2025, while phase two commenced 5th January and ended 17th April 2026. The Commission said the date for the third phase will be announced in due course, reaffirming its commitment to a transparent voter register as the foundation for free and fair elections in 2027.
