Life is transient
Life is transient. Everything has its appointed time and expiry date. We are here today and tomorrow we are no more.
The book of Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 states: Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses. He sets the time for birth and the time for death, the time for planting and the time for pulling up, the time for killing and the time for healing, the time for tearing down and the time for building.
He sets the time for sorrow and the time for joy, the time for mourning and the time for dancing, the time for making love and the time for not making love, the time for kissing and the time for not kissing.
He sets the time for finding and the time for losing, the time for saving and the time for throwing away, the time for tearing and the time for mending, the time for silence and the time for talk. He sets the time for love and the time for hate, the time for war and the time for peace. This is how the Almighty created all things and made them be.
When a woman brings forth life in childbirth, there is a lot of celebration of the life that has been born. That child who has been given to cries to herald his or her coming. The other people around are joyful and full of smiles for the gift of a newborn. He or she lives his/her life till the time appointed for him or her by her maker.
The life God has given us is a gift to us; what we make of it is a gift we give back to God. At the time of death, the dead person has no inclination as to what is going around. However, while at the time of his or her birth, people rejoiced, at the time of such a person’s death, there is so much wailing and crying by others. This is contrast to the time of birth.
The time we spend here on earth is a currency meant to be spent wisely. How we spend it speaks volumes about the quality of our lives. Our lives are meant to make positive impact on those around us. No one is an island hence, we ought to live in harmony with all those around us. We are communal persons hence, the need to share our lives with others. We can know our birth dates but the date of our death is known only to God.
God has given each and every one of us a purpose for our existence. We have all been created with a task to carry out. We have different missions. In between our toil, we all have a God given purpose.
Life is just like the school bell. In the morning, the bell is rung for us to go to school and when the day is over, the same bell is rung for us to go back home. Such is life. When the bell for our birth is rang by our maker, we come into the world; when it is time to go back home, just as the closing bell is rung in school, so also is the bell of our lives.
In the recent times, there have been so many deaths. Some we as human beings describe as untimely while for others, we begin to ask questions. Life is fleeting, life is passing, life is temporal, life is a stage- we are here for some time and we leave the stage when our game is over.
In between life and death, there is a whole lot to be done. We are engaged in so many activities. In doing that, we are either good or bad. The life we have has been given to us by God. What do you make out of it? How do you relate to or with those around you? What impact are you making in the lives of those close to you? What will be said of you when you are gone?
The rate at which people are passing away should give us reasons to adjust our lives because we never know when the bell will toll. So many deaths have come close home. You are told that the person you just saw is dead.
What irks me sometimes is the way some people live their lives as if they will remain on earth forever. They misuse the opportunities they have by meting out untold hardship to their fellow human beings. The kind of wickedness we see in the world makes one think if people know there is a tomorrow. There are gross acts of man’s inhumanity to man. People do something to their fellow human being without batting an eyelid. What a world we live in.
Just as life is transient, so is power. Those in positions of authority today will not remain there forever. You have the power and authority now and today is an opportunity to make the best out of life; it is a golden opportunity to use your position to transform the lives of others. The legacy you live behind will definitely speak volumes after you are gone? What will you be remembered for? What will be said about you after your departure from this world.
Life, oh life. If only we know how fleeting this life is. No matter how long one stays on the surface of the earth, one thing is sure- we must all die. This world is not our home. We are sojourners and will one day go to our eternal place of abode. Do you know where you will be? Our good or bad deeds will follow us on our journey out of this world.
I was in the hospital recently where I went to see my aunt who was involved in an accident (she later passed on). That fateful morning, a young man drove in a Peugeot 406 vehicle carrying his wife and mother. Just before they could reach out to the Doctors in the Accident and Emergency ward, she passed on. A young woman with three young children who she was preparing for school that morning.
Also, just last weekend, a young man in the company of his friends were at a joint relaxing. He got a call from his wife to come home. He got into his house and that was the last thing heard about him. His friends who he was with couldn’t believe it when they heard the news.
These and others are just the very sad tales we hear.
There is a time to be born and a time to die. What we make of it lies in our hands. The grave is a leveler. We should ensure we do right, live right, make the best use of the opportunities we have, leave good legacies behind, make positive impact on the lives of those we come across.
The question we should always ask ourselves is- if tomorrow never comes, what will be said of me? What will I be remembered for? What will be my last end?
