From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Management of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has taken a bold step to strengthen safety measures within the institution, by organising a two-day intensive training for its security personnel on fire prevention and response strategies.

Declaring the programme open at the school auditorium, the Rector, Dr Abdul  Mohammed, said the initiative was borne out of the need to safeguard lives, property, and the environment from avoidable disasters.

He noted that the benefits of the training would extend beyond the institution to the wider community.

“Fire prevention is not just a duty; it is a responsibility we owe to ourselves, our community, and the institutions we serve,” the Rector stated, urging participants to approach the programme with utmost seriousness.

Head of Fire Prevention at the Kwara State Fire Services, Mr. Kazeem Bashir, commended the Polytechnic for setting the pace in safety consciousness. He explained that fire safety awareness remains critical, stressing that institutions and communities must be proactive in curbing fire outbreaks.

Also speaking, the institution’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Samuel Kudabo, appreciated the Management for investing in it’s security team. He said the training was designed to expose participants to advanced firefighting techniques, emergency response planning, coordination, and compliance with safety regulations.

According to him, the programme would not only sharpen skills but also promote a culture of fire safety and knowledge-sharing among participants.
