From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The University of Ilorin, has recorded a significant milestone in academic quality as 36 out of the 37 courses it submitted for accreditation were granted full approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The only exception, Hausa, received interim accreditation.

The accreditation outcome followed an evaluation exercise conducted by the NUC in October and November 2024. The result, conveyed in a letter dated April 30, 2025, and signed by the Acting Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, confirmed that no course presented was denied accreditation.

A breakdown of the results showed that the Faculty of Education led with all 17 programmes fully accredited. Faculties of Management Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Communication and Information Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences also recorded full accreditations in all or most of the courses presented.

From the Faculty of Arts, Igbo received full accreditation while Hausa received interim status—making it the only course among the 37 that did not receive full accreditation.

Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), described the news as a validation of the university’s commitment to excellence.

“We are happy to be so recognised. We are indeed elated,” he said in a statement issued by the institution’s spokesperson, Mr. Kunle Akogun.

Professor Egbewole attributed the success to sustained investment in staff capacity and infrastructure, commending the university’s academic leadership for their contributions.

“We thank the Provost, Deans, Heads of Departments and all faculty members that have made this possible,” he said. “We will continue to do our best to position the university for greater recognition.”

The development reinforces Unilorin’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions of higher learning with a strong commitment to academic standards.
