From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Kwara State House of Assembly, began the legislative process for a new law to reform the state’s power sector and protect independent electricity providers, while also calling for urgent action against illegal cooperative societies defrauding residents.

During the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, the lawmakers took the first reading of the Kwara State Electric Power Sector Bill, 2025, which seeks to repeal outdated electricity board laws from 1992 and 2006.

The bill, sponsored by Hon. Rukayat Shittu (Owode/Onire) and seconded by Hon. Omotosho Rasaq (Isin), aims to improve electricity supply and support the growth of independent power projects across the state.

“This bill is timely,” Hon. Shittu said, “and it reflects the need to empower our local economy through reliable and decentralised electricity networks.”

Copies of the bill were circulated to members and referred to the Business and Rules Committee for further scrutiny ahead of second reading.

Also at the sitting, the House deliberated on a motion concerning the unchecked rise in unregistered cooperative societies operating in the state. Moved by Hon. Odetundun Olushola (Irepodun) and seconded by Hon. Maryam Yusuf Aladi (Ilorin South), the motion drew strong support from several members who highlighted the risks posed by fraudulent entities parading as cooperatives.

In its resolutions, the House called on the Governor to direct the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology to begin the identification and registration enforcement of all cooperative societies. Those failing to comply are to face closure and legal action.

In addition, the Ministry of Communication was advised to work with the National Broadcasting Commission and the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria to ensure radio stations only promote licensed and credible financial organizations.

Earlier in the session, the Speaker acknowledged the presence of student observers from the Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union, Kwara State Polytechnic chapter, and the Ilorin University Medical Students’ Association, who were present in the gallery.

The House adjourned following a motion moved by Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir (Ilorin Central) and seconded by Hon. Abdulraheem Medinat Motunrayo (Lanwa/Ejidongari).
