From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

Thousands of Christians in Ilorin, Kwara State, joined believers around the world to celebrate Palm Sunday with colourful processions, heartfelt songs and symbolic palm fronds, marking the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

In Ilorin, worshippers gathered at various points including Saint Barnabas Cathedral, Sabo-Oke, and First Baptist Church, Surulere, before converging at Unity Junction. Singing, dancing and chanting “Hosanna,” the faithful moved through major streets like Muritala Road, Maraba, Amilegbe, Ipata, Taiwo Road and Unity Road in a vibrant display of devotion and unity.

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in Kwara State, Bishop Sunday Adewole, used the occasion to encourage Christians to follow the path of humility and peace laid down by Jesus Christ.

“Jesus chose to ride on a colt, showing the world that true greatness lies in humility. As followers of Christ, we must love one another, live in peace, and serve God with renewed dedication,” he said.

State Vice Chairman of CAN, Pastor Ademola Popoola, echoed the call for spiritual renewal, urging Nigerians to draw closer to God.

“Christ gave His life for our salvation. The best way to honour that sacrifice is to live in holiness and humility,” he stated.

Also speaking, Deaconess Funke Olatunji,  emphasised that the spirit of unity and humility can drive national progress. “Jesus’ humility is a lesson for us all. It’s time we put aside selfishness and embrace peace for our nation’s sake,” she said.

In a message delivered by his Senior Special Adviser on Christian Religious Matters, Reverend Timothy Akangbe, Kwara State Governor,  Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, called on citizens to work together for national development.

“The government remains committed to making life easier for our people, but we need your support and prayers to succeed,” he said.

Clerics including Reverend Father Ralph Ajewole, Reverend Bolaji Akinyemi and Evangelist Timothy Opoola all encouraged Nigerians to abandon old habits, love one another, and strive to touch lives positively.

“This season is not just about celebration. It’s a reminder to reflect on our lives, seek peace, and live for one another,” Reverend Ajewole added.
