From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Kwara State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Umar Mohammed, has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Officers across the state to develop and implement crime-reduction strategies specific to their localities.

Speaking during a high-level strategy session with senior officers at the State Command Headquarters in Ilorin, Dr Umar, emphasised the need for a proactive and people-focused approach to security. He urged his officers to intensify patrols, boost community engagement, and respond swiftly to incidents.

“Security challenges are becoming more complex. Our officers must be ahead of the game through effective intelligence gathering and quick intervention,” the Commandant said.

He reminded officers of the NSCDC’s constitutional mandate to protect critical national infrastructure and maintain law and order, noting that the meeting was aimed at reviewing operational tactics in line with this responsibility.

In a stern warning, Dr Umar cautioned against unprofessional conduct among personnel, including corruption, extortion, and uncivil behaviour towards the public. “We must reflect the values of integrity, civility, and professionalism in all our dealings. Any officer found wanting will face the consequences,” he declared.

He also highlighted the directives of the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, on upholding discipline and accountability within the Corps.

To forestall criminal activities such as banditry, vandalism, and sabotage—particularly around critical assets—Commandant Umar charged his officers to enhance their intelligence networks and act swiftly on credible information.

He stressed the importance of collaboration with sister security agencies, adding that no single body can address modern security threats alone. “Security is a shared responsibility. We must build synergy and share intelligence if we want to effectively tackle crime in our state,” he said.

The strategic meeting marked a renewed push by the Kwara NSCDC to ensure a safer environment through coordinated and responsive policing.
