-Resolves 196 Farmer-Herder Clashes

From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin.

The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has pledged to intensify efforts to protect farmers and ensure food security by addressing farmer-herder conflicts.

Commandant Umar Muhammed, speaking at the Command Headquarters in Ilorin, reaffirmed the Corps’ dedication to safeguarding farmers and supporting sustainable agriculture in the state.

Highlighting the achievements of the NSCDC’s Agro Rangers Unit, Commandant Umar revealed that 196 cases of farmer-herder clashes were successfully resolved over the past year through the unit’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) strategy.

He attributed this success to the rigorous ADR training given to Agro Rangers personnel, which has enabled effective mediation across Kwara State’s 16 local government areas.

“The Agro Rangers personnel have been trained and certified in Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms,” stated Commandant Umar.

“This allows them to mediate conflicts between itinerant herders and sedentary farmers, significantly reducing farmer-herder clashes and promoting peaceful coexistence in agrarian communities.”

Commandant Umar also emphasised the Corps’ proactive security measures, which include deploying personnel to critical areas such as Shonga Farm in Edu Local Government Area and providing ongoing surveillance and patrols.

He assured that both individual and corporate farmlands would continue to receive protection, supporting food security and the growth of the agricultural sector in Kwara.

The NSCDC remains committed to the security of farmers and farmlands across Kwara State, reinforcing efforts to reduce conflict and encourage peaceful farming communities in pursuit of sustainable food production.
