The Kogi State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has commemorated the 2024 World Humanitarian Day with a series of impactful activities, including a road walk and visit to orphanages.
The event was tailored at raising awareness about the critical importance of humanitarian work and to honor those who dedicate their lives to serving others in times of crisis.
In her address, Commissioner Hajia Rabietu Okute, highlighted the significance of World Humanitarian Day as “a call for action, a call to celebrate the tireless efforts of those who work in the face of unimaginable adversity to provide relief, rebuild lives, and restore hope.”

She emphasised that this year’s theme serves as a poignant reminder that humanitarian work is not merely a response to crises but a fundamental expression of our shared humanity.
The Commissioner expressed her deep appreciation for the unwavering support of the Kogi State Government under the leadership of Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo. She noted that his leadership style and vision have been instrumental in driving humanitarian efforts and improving the lives of citizens.
She also called on the people of Kogi State to continue supporting the current administration, noting that through its initiatives, the Ministry, alongside the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and various social investment programs, have been able to reach the less privileged across the state.
According to her, since the establishment of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the state government has distributed five batches of palliatives to vulnerable communities, demonstrating a continued commitment to alleviating poverty and providing essential support to those in need.
Commissioner Okute revealed that, as part of the World Humanitarian Day celebration, orphanages across the state would be visited to distribute items and show solidarity with the children.
Hajia Okute reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to addressing the needs of the most vulnerable in society, urging all stakeholders to continue working together to ensure that humanitarian efforts in Kogi State are sustained and strengthened.
The day’s activities commenced with a road walk that saw participants, including government officials, Non-Governmental Organizations and local residents, marching through the streets of Lokoja. The walk served as a powerful symbol of unity and a public display of support for humanitarian courses.
The celebration of World Humanitarian Day in Kogi State not only recognized the invaluable contributions of humanitarian workers but also reinforced the state’s dedication to providing for its most vulnerable citizens, ensuring that no one is left behind.
