From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has denied claims that the Commission’s Chairman endorsed a partisan post on X (formerly Twitter), calling the allegation “baseless” and a “total fabrication”.

According to a statement issued and signed by his Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola, in Abuja, said, the commission has clarified that Prof. Amupitan, doesn’t have an account on X and hasn’t engaged in partisan commentary.

This statement, was attributed to the fake post “cybercriminals” using the chairman’s name to defraud Nigerians, saying INEC is working with security agencies to track those responsible.

INEC therefore, urged the public to disregard the false claim and warned that identity theft and spreading fake news are criminal offenses under the Cybercrimes Act.
