From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Ilorin Muslim community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a revered cleric and Imam of Olesin Community Mosque, Okelele, Sheikh Muhammad Sanni Imam Olesin, who passed away at the age of 102.

The late religious leader, widely known as Imam Olesin and Oniwasi Ode-Yitta, died on Monday, March 30, 2026, after a long life devoted to Islamic teachings and community service.

Family sources described his passing as the end of an era, noting that the centenarian cleric lived a fulfilled life marked by humility, scholarship and dedication to the propagation of Islam.

Before his appointment as the Imam of Olesin Mosque in 2012, Sheikh Sanni, had served as Alfa Akomonikewu in Ogba Awo, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where he earned respect for his deep knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and spiritual leadership.

In a statement issued by a family representative, Alhaji Abdullahi Olesin, the family announced that the Janazah prayer for the late cleric would hold at the Alfa Olesin compound in Okelele, Ilorin, on Tuesday at 2pm.

“We pray Allah grants him Aljanah Firdaus and give the family and the entire Muslim Ummah the fortitude to bear the loss,” the statement read.

The late Imam’s death is expected to draw sympathisers, Islamic scholars and faithful from within and outside Kwara State, as tributes continue to pour in for the respected community leader.
