From David Onuoja, Abuja

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has urged Residents Electoral Commissioners (REC), to focus on the need for excellence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Addressing RECs today, Prof. Amupitan stressed that excellence is not optional, but mandatory, as the Commission prepares for the 2027 General Election.

He commended the successful conduct of the FCT Area Council election and bye-elections in Kano and Rivers States, despite some logistical challenges. Noting that, voter apathy remains a concern, with turnout improving slightly to 15% in the FCT election.

The INEC Chairman however, directed RECs to intensify voter education and sensitization, ensuring citizens understand the electoral process. He also emphasised accountability, warning that staff dereliction of duty would face sanctions.

Prof. Amupitan also highlighted improvements in result management, including safeguards against manipulation, and announced plans to review electoral regulations and guidelines for the 2027 election.

INEC Boss equally congratulated Dr. Chukwu Joseph on his reappointment as REC for Abia State, urging him to foster trust in the democratic process. While stressing that, the Commission’s credibility depends on performance, and each staff member plays a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, he said.
