The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has invited stakeholders to contribute to the review of the National Telecommunications Policy (NTP) 2000.
The Commission has published a consultation paper on its website and is seeking written submissions by March 20, 2026.
This review was part of the Commission’s efforts to update the NTP, which was first introduced 25 years ago.
The revised policy aimed at addressing emerging issues such as spectrum management, universal access, broadband penetration, net neutrality, and quality of service.
NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, stated that the process will lead to the development of the first draft of the NTP 2026.
The consultation process is open to various stakeholders, including licensees, consumers, government agencies, and civil society organizations.
Dr. Maida emphasised that the feedback received will guide the review and amendment of the NTP, aligning with the expectations of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
The NTP 2000 has contributed significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s telecom sector, with mobile connections increasing from 500,000 to almost 180 million. The revised policy seeks to address the increased demand for data services and its externalities. The NCC aims is to ensure that the final draft accommodates varied expertise and feedback from stakeholders.
The review of the NTP is a key component of the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy’s Strategic Blueprint, which focuses on driving technical efficiency and collective prosperity. The NCC encourages stakeholders to participate in developing the policy that will shape the future of the communications sector.
