*calls report malicious attempt to stoke tension

From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Kwara State Chapter, has debunked an online report alleging that its state chairman, Alhaji Shehu Garba, was arrested over kidnapping and terrorism-related offences, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately fabricated.

Alhaji Garba, in a statement personally signed by him and made available to journalists in Ilorin, said the publication circulating on social media had no basis and was the handiwork of “enemies of peace bent on causing confusion and damaging reputations.”

“At no time was I arrested, invited, interrogated or investigated by any security agency in Kwara State or anywhere in Nigeria over kidnapping, terrorism or the sponsorship of banditry,” he said.

He stressed that there was no security report, official record or credible source to support the allegations credited to an online platform, Kwara Update, adding that the claims were a complete fabrication.

According to the MACBAN chairman, the report was a calculated attempt to tarnish his image and undermine his long-standing efforts as a community leader working closely with government authorities, security agencies and traditional rulers to promote peaceful coexistence and security across the state.

“I am widely known for my commitment to dialogue, conflict resolution and respect for the rule of law. This write-up is clearly designed to portray me in bad light and create unnecessary suspicion,” Garba stated.

He warned that the reckless use of terms such as “terrorism,” “Fulani bandits” and “admission to kidnapping” without evidence was not only irresponsible but dangerous to social harmony.

“Such language fuels ethnic profiling, incites public resentment and undermines the ongoing efforts to build trust between communities and security institutions,” he said.

Garba further reiterated that MACBAN, as an association, has consistently and publicly condemned kidnapping, banditry and all forms of criminality, regardless of the individuals involved.

He demanded an immediate retraction of the publication and a public apology, warning that failure to do so would compel him to explore all lawful means to protect his integrity and reputation.

The MACBAN chairman also urged members of the public to disregard the report in its entirety and advised citizens to always verify information through credible and official channels before sharing.
