From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

A High Court sitting in Ilorin, has sentenced a man, Abdullateef Yakub, to five years imprisonment after finding him guilty of attempted culpable homicide and causing grievous hurt in a violent attack that left his victim with a slit throat.

Yakub was accused of attacking one Abubakar Babatunde with a knife at Shao Garage in Ilorin on December 26, 2023. During the trial, the prosecution team led by the Kwara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman Esq, called four witnesses, including the victim, to narrate how the incident unfolded.

The defendant also testified in his own defence and called his father as a witness. After evaluating the evidence before the court, Justice I. Olawoyin ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted Yakub.

He was subsequently sentenced to five years imprisonment for attempted culpable homicide and an additional three years with an option of a N50,000 fine for causing grievous hurt. However, the court ordered that both sentences run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of five years.
