From Taiye Joseph, Ilorin

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kwara State Chapter, has condemned the recent deadly attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku, in Ekiti Local Government Area, describing it as a “barbaric assault on the sanctity of the church and the peace of the state.”

The attack, which occurred during a revival service, led to the killing of several worshippers while others were abducted by gunmen. CAN officials said the tragic incident marks the first time in recent memory that such a violent invasion has taken place within Kwara.

“This wicked and distasteful attack is grievous and unacceptable. An invasion of a church during a service is an affront to God and a direct attack on the entire Christian community,” said the CAN State Chairman, Bishop Sunday Adewole.

CAN called on all security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and NSCDC, to immediately launch a coordinated operation to apprehend the perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted victims.

The association also urged law enforcement officers to strengthen surveillance in communities across the state to prevent a recurrence.

According to the leadership of CAN, contacts have already been made with the Kwara State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and relevant security stakeholders to ensure swift intervention. The national leadership of CAN has also been fully briefed and is in solidarity with the Kwara chapter.

In a show of compassion, Bishop Adewole and the State Secretary, Apostle Shina Ibiyemi, visited Eruku to commiserate with the church and residents. They said they were received by community leaders, after which they held prayers for the victims and the community.

“To our brothers and sisters in Eruku, you are not alone. We stand with you in this moment of pain and agony. Our prayers are with the families of the victims, and we trust God for the safe return of everyone abducted,” Apostle Ibiyemi said during the visit.

CAN encouraged Christians across Kwara State to remain calm, prayerful, and vigilant while trusting God for healing and peace across the land.
