Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC), has officially announced the notice of election for the 2026 Local Government Elections, set to take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Reverton Hotels in Lokoja, attended by key figures from various organisations, political parties, and security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Army, and other service chiefs.

The notice, issued pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2025, outlines the framework for electing Chairmen for the 21 Local Government Areas and Councillors for the 239 Electoral Wards in Kogi State.

The notice, published 360 days before the election as mandated by law, serves as a formal declaration of the Commission’s readiness to conduct credible elections and marks a significant step toward ensuring a transparent, free, and fair electoral process in the state.

In his address, the Chairman of KOSIEC, Honourable Mamman Nda Eri, emphasised the Commission’s dedication to conducting free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections and called on all stakeholders to work together to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and avoid actions that could undermine the democratic exercise.

He emphasised the Commission’s commitment to upholding the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2025.

The Chairman further announced that a detailed timetable and schedule of activities for the 2026 Local Government Elections will be released on Friday, October 24, 2025. This timetable will include critical dates for party primaries, submission of candidates’ lists, publication of nominated candidates’ names, and the commencement and conclusion of election campaigns.

Political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders were urged to strictly adhere to the timetable, the Electoral Act, 2022, the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2025, and KOSIEC guidelines to ensure a seamless and peaceful electoral process.

It added that only political parties duly registered and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), will be eligible to sponsor candidates for the elections. This provision aligns with the Electoral Act and the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, ensuring that only legitimate political entities participate in the democratic process.

The presence of high-ranking officials from the Nigeria Police, NSCDC, Nigerian Army, and other security agencies underscored the importance of maintaining peace and order throughout the election process. Their involvement signals a collaborative effort to ensure a secure environment for voters, candidates, and electoral officials.

KOSIEC urged all political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the electoral guidelines and adhere strictly to the rules, stressing that compliance with the Electoral Act, Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, and KOSIEC regulations is crucial for a successful election.

Political parties were also advised to prepare for the upcoming party primaries and ensure that their candidates meet all eligibility criteria as outlined by law.

The 2026 Local Government Elections represents a critical opportunity to strengthen grassroots democracy in Kogi State. By electing Chairmen and Councillors, citizens will have a direct say in the leadership of their local communities, fostering development and accountability at the grassroots level.

As the state prepares for the elections, KOSIEC remains committed to ensuring transparency and fairness. The Commission’s proactive approach, including the early announcement of the election date and the engagement of stakeholders, sets a positive tone for the electoral process.

With the detailed timetable set to be released on October 24, 2025, political parties and aspirants are expected to begin preparations for the primaries and other pre-election activities. The Commission has assured stakeholders of its readiness to provide all necessary support to ensure a smooth process.
